IOM Reports Over 70,600 Nigerians Returned from Irregular Migration

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported that over 70,600 Nigerians have been assisted in returning from irregular migration journeys since 2017. Of these, more than 44,500 returnees have received reintegration assistance, while others are still undergoing the process.

This information was shared during a two-day workshop for media practitioners and On-Air Personalities (OAPs) held on 21 and 22 September 2026 at R&K Hotel in Kano. Elijah Alaigwu, IOM Nigeria Communication Officer, stated that the organization, in collaboration with the Nigerian government and partners such as the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), continues to support Nigerians affected by irregular migration.

Alaigwu urged prospective migrants to travel through documented channels to avoid exploitation by smugglers and traffickers. He also called for increased media involvement in raising awareness about the dangers of irregular migration.

Umar Muhammad from NAPTIP reported 154 complaints related to human trafficking and secured nine convictions since January.
