Over 2 Million Nigerians Face Avoidable Blindness

The Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN) reported that over two million Nigerians are living with avoidable blindness, primarily caused by cataracts. Prof. Abubakar Rafindadi, Vice-President of OSN, made this announcement during a press briefing on Wednesday ahead of the 51st Annual General Meeting and Annual Scientific Conference, scheduled for September 2 to 4 in Abuja.

The conference will focus on "Re-imaging Eye Care in the Digital Era," emphasizing the use of artificial intelligence and tele-ophthalmology to enhance access to eye care. Rafindadi noted that despite ongoing efforts, Nigeria has not achieved the necessary cataract surgical rates to significantly reduce avoidable blindness.

He highlighted advancements in ophthalmic training and technology, including the establishment of simulation centers in Lagos and Ibadan, and the integration of eye care into primary healthcare, which has expanded from 14 to 21 states. Over 2,500 primary healthcare workers have been trained, with ongoing efforts to utilize technology for better access to eye care in underserved communities.
