PDP Demands APC Take Responsibility for Nigeria's Economic Crisis

The opposition party rejected President Tinubu's claims that the APC inherited hardship from previous administrations, calling for concrete solutions instead.

The Peoples Democratic Party fired back at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress on Monday, rejecting accusations that the opposition caused Nigeria's current economic difficulties. At an APC campaign event in Kaduna on Saturday, Tinubu stated his administration was working to reverse hardship stemming from opposition rule.

The PDP, represented by National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, countered that the ruling party must stop deflecting blame and address the nation's pressing challenges directly. The opposition party's response centred on accountability.

Rather than accept responsibility for hunger, rising food costs, unemployment and declining purchasing power, the PDP said, the APC continues attributing these problems to the 16 years of PDP governance that ended in 2015. According to the party, Nigerians deserve tangible remedies, not excuses.

The faction of the PDP backed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike emphasised that citizens face immediate crises requiring action from those currently in power. The PDP called on the APC to detail what specific measures the government has implemented to tackle the economic hardship affecting ordinary Nigerians.

The party argued that pointing to past administrations does not resolve the shortage of affordable food, widespread joblessness or the erosion of citizens' ability to afford basic goods. Mohammed's statement, released Monday, positioned the disagreement as a matter of governmental responsibility rather than partisan scoring.

The exchange reflects the intensifying political blame game as both major parties position themselves ahead of upcoming electoral contests. The APC contends it inherited deep economic problems from previous leadership, while the PDP insists the current administration must own its performance and deliver solutions rather than recycle historical grievances.
