Police Arrest, Release Okorocha Over Forgery Allegations; Ex-Governor Denies Claims

On Monday evening, operatives from the Nigeria Police Force apprehended former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha at an Abuja hotel. Following roughly sixty minutes of interrogation, he was released on bail.

CSP Anietie Iniedu, the force spokesperson, attributed the detention to accusations including criminal conspiracy, forgery, and impersonation. Okorocha received instructions to appear again for continued investigation.

The former governor's media representatives entirely refuted this account. Sam Onwuemeodo, serving as Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media, issued a denial stating Okorocha had never been held in custody.

The statement additionally asserted that authorities had relied on a court order that had already been invalidated by judicial action. Okorocha's camp described the police action as persecution by the Imo State administration.

Prior invitations to Okorocha had gone unanswered, according to police statements, leading them to secure a bench warrant. Nigerian Tribune documented that Okorocha was present at a social gathering when taken into custody.

Specifics about the alleged conspiracy charge and details of forgery accusations were not made public by investigators. Between 2011 and 2019, Okorocha served as governor of Imo State.

He also held a Senate seat representing Imo West. Competing narratives from both the police and Okorocha's team leave crucial aspects of what transpired in dispute.

Authorities have required his return on Tuesday as investigative work continues forward.
