Polish President Vetoes €40 Billion EU Defense Plan

On Thursday, Polish President Karol Nawrocki vetoed a €40 billion EU defense funding plan that had already been approved by parliament. This plan aimed to enhance Poland's military capabilities amidst ongoing conflicts in neighboring Ukraine.

Nawrocki, whose relationship with Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-EU government is strained, argued that the deal would compromise Poland's sovereignty and burden the country with debt. Tusk condemned the veto as an act of national treason, stating it undermined Poland's security.

The veto prompted Nawrocki to call an extraordinary cabinet meeting for Friday. Poland's defense budget currently stands at 4.8% of its GDP, one of the highest in NATO.

Critics, including political scientists, suggest that Nawrocki's motivations may be to weaken Tusk's government ahead of the 2027 general elections. The debate surrounding the veto reflects broader tensions within Polish politics regarding EU relations and national defense strategies.
