Politicians Bribed Electoral Officers in 2019 Elections

Mike Igini, the former Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), disclosed that during the 2019 Nigerian general elections, politicians distributed dollars to Presiding Officers shortly after their training. Speaking on a television morning show, Igini reported that these electoral officials received money, which raises serious ethical concerns.

He warned that such bribery could lead to possible arrests for officials who fail to uphold ethical standards. Igini cited provisions in the electoral act that appear to grant immunity, allowing electoral misconduct to go unpunished.

He raised alarms about the legal framework ahead of the 2027 elections, indicating that these provisions could weaken the credibility of the electoral process. Igini emphasized the supervisory role of INEC and its chairman, highlighting the need for integrity and adherence to ethical principles to prevent future electoral malpractices.
