Pope Leo XIV Concludes African Tour in Angola

Pope Leo XIV is concluding his three-day visit to Angola, marking the third leg of his African tour. He is set to become the third pontiff to visit Angola, a country rich in fossil fuels, where approximately 44 percent of the population identifies as Catholic.

His arrival in Luanda is expected at 14:00 GMT, and he will meet with Angolan President João Lourenço. The Pope's visit comes amid increasing tensions with U.S.

President Donald Trump, as he has adopted a more forceful tone in his calls for peace and against corruption, particularly in Africa. Angola, which emerged from a 27-year civil war in 2002, faces significant challenges, including rampant poverty and corruption despite its vast oil reserves.

The Pope will celebrate a large open-air mass and visit the historic church in Muxima, a significant pilgrimage site. His tour also includes a stop in Equatorial Guinea, wrapping up an 18,000-kilometer journey that began in Algeria.
