Pope Leo XIV's First Major African Tour Begins April 11

Pope Leo XIV will undertake his first significant foreign tour as pontiff from April 11 to April 23, visiting Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. This trip covers approximately 18,000 kilometers (11,000 miles) and will include seven masses and various speeches.

In Algeria, he will meet President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and address the treatment of religious minorities. In Cameroon, he will visit the conflict-torn northwest region and meet President Paul Biya, who has faced criticism for his long tenure.

In Angola, he will focus on social themes related to wealth distribution and corruption. The Pope's visit to Equatorial Guinea will require a careful approach due to the authoritarian regime of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

The trip is significant as it marks the first time a pope has visited Algeria, a predominantly Muslim country, and aims to foster dialogue and peace amidst ongoing global uncertainties.
