Trump had criticized the Pope's call for peace amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, labeling him as weak and accusing him of aligning with radical left ideologies. In response, Pope Leo XIV, the first American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, stated that he would not be intimidated by the Trump administration and would continue to speak out against war, emphasizing the moral imperative of peace as guided by Christian teachings.

He clarified that his role is not political and reiterated a call for an immediate end to the war in Iran. The Pope's remarks came ahead of his scheduled arrival in Algeria, marking the start of his African tour, which includes visits to Cameroon and Angola.
