Remi Tinubu's 'Sell Akara' Advice Sparks Controversy

Remi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, faced backlash for her advice encouraging Nigerians to embrace small-scale businesses such as selling akara and roasting corn in response to economic hardships. Sundai Dare, a spokesperson for the Presidency, defended her comments, asserting they were widely misunderstood and aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

He explained that the First Lady's remarks were rooted in the values of hard work and resilience, rather than trivializing the economic challenges faced by millions of Nigerians. Dare noted that the informal sector is a significant driver of the economy, providing livelihoods for many despite prevailing difficulties.

He shared personal anecdotes about his mother's small trade business, which funded his education. Critics argue that the government should focus on implementing policies to create jobs and improve living standards instead of advising citizens to rely on small-scale trade.

Nonetheless, Dare maintained that Tinubu's comments were intended to inspire Nigerians to embrace self-employment and recognize the dignity of honest labor.
