Nigeria's Presidency to Deploy 750,000 Meters in 2027

The Presidency intends to install 750,000 electricity meters in 2027 as part of the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) to close Nigeria's metering gap and reduce reliance on estimated billing in the power sector. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) announced this plan in a metering factsheet issued on 14 October.
Currently, 12.75 million electricity customers are active in Nigeria, with only 8.05 million having meters, resulting in a metering rate of 63.10 percent, leaving approximately 4.7 million customers unmetered. The PMI is one of several initiatives aimed at accelerating meter deployment, alongside the Meter Asset Provider scheme, the National Mass Metering Programme, the Meter Acquisition Fund, and the World Bank-backed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme.
NERC explained that the MAP scheme allows customers to pay upfront for their meters and receive refunds through energy credits. The factsheet did not specify how the 750,000 meters would be distributed among electricity distribution companies or the locations covered in 2027.
