Amosun Advocates Preventive Healthcare for Cancer Awareness

Mrs Olufunso Amosun, the former First Lady of Ogun State, urged women to prioritize early detection and regular medical screening to combat cancer, which she stated should not be viewed as a death sentence. She made these remarks on Wednesday at the launch of the 2026 free breast and cervical cancer screening program at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta, supported by the UPLIFT Development Foundation.
Amosun highlighted the alarming increase in breast cancer cases in Nigeria, citing a nearly 300 percent rise over the past three decades. According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2022, Nigeria reported 32,278 new breast cancer cases and 16,332 deaths, making it the highest-burden nation in Africa for breast cancer.
She stressed that early detection could lead to survival rates exceeding 90 percent, compared to less than 30 percent for advanced cases. In the previous year's program, over 600 women benefited, with 22 identified for further medical attention, showcasing the initiative's commitment to providing essential healthcare services.
