COPSUN Criticizes Regulatory Interference in Universities

The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities (COPSUN) expressed concerns over regulatory interference by professional bodies in university administration during its 73rd quarterly meeting in Ibadan. COPSUN, chaired by Prof. Ayodeji Omole, called for the National Universities Commission (NUC) to include members of these bodies in its accreditation teams to mitigate such interference.

The committee emphasized the need for the NUC to be legally empowered to maintain overriding authority over university governance, as the current situation has led to "accreditation fatigue" due to overlapping regulatory demands. Additionally, COPSUN addressed the extension of the Vice-Chancellor's tenure at Osun State University, which was reportedly extended by two years beyond the statutory five-year term through an executive pronouncement by the Visitor, Governor Adeleke.

COPSUN resolved to notify the Visitor about this illegality and urged adherence to the existing university laws as per the University Miscellaneous Act of 2012.
