FG Launches 2026 Tertiary Education Agreements and Allowances

The Federal Government has announced the unveiling and implementation of the 2026 agreements with academic and non-academic staff unions, which includes the payment of approved allowances to eligible personnel nationwide, effective January 1, 2026. Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of Education, made this announcement in Abuja, highlighting it as a significant milestone in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The agreements aim to address longstanding industrial disputes that have led to strikes and disrupted academic calendars. They include the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance for members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, as well as the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance for eligible non-teaching personnel.
Dr Alausa emphasized the importance of improved staff welfare and institutional performance. To ensure accountability, the existing Implementation and Monitoring Committee for the Academic Staff Union of Universities agreement will be expanded to cover all staff unions, with potential plans for it to become permanent.
