Imo State Court Admits Evidence in NYSC Kidnap Case

On October 28, a High Court in Imo State resumed the trial of five individuals accused of kidnapping 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members on Independence Day. The court, presided over by Justice Emeka Orafu, admitted evidence presented by the Department of State Services (DSS), which included confessional statements from the defendants, an audio-visual recording of their confessions, and recovered firearms and cash.
Ikem Emmanuel, the first principal witness, testified that the defendants admitted to conspiracy, hostage-taking, and unlawful possession of firearms, with their statements taken in the presence of legal representatives and DSS officers. The judge ruled that the recovered arms and money be kept in DSS custody.
The trial was adjourned to October 28, 29, and 30 for further hearings, with all five defendants ordered to remain in DSS custody.
