Protesters Demand Real-Time Election Results Transmission at Nigeria's National Assembly

Protesters, advocating for democratic reforms, barricaded the main entrance of Nigeria's National Assembly in Abuja. They demanded lawmakers to include clear provisions for mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The protest ensued after the Senate voted down a clause that would compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transmit election results electronically in real-time. The demonstrators emphasized that without real-time transmission, election security and credibility could be compromised.

The protest reflects a growing public outcry following the Senate's rejection of the crucial clause during the bill's third reading. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and other civil society groups have criticized the Senate's handling of the electoral amendment.

Legal experts, including Femi Falana, hinted at possible legal challenges to the Senate's decision. The protesters vowed to continue demonstrating until their demands for electoral transparency and consistency are met.
