JNPSNC Backs N70,000 Transport Allowance for Workers

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) has endorsed the federal government's decision to implement a N70,000 monthly transportation allowance for Nigerian public servants, starting from November 2026. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of increasing transportation costs on workers.
The agreement was reached on October 27, 2026, following extensive negotiations lasting over six hours, involving the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), JNPSNC, and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU). Comrade Gbenga Olowoyo, the national secretary of JNPSNC, emphasized the need for state and local governments to adopt similar measures, as workers at these levels also face economic challenges.
The circular issued by Olowoyo also addressed objections from the Trade Union Congress (TUC), asserting that they were not part of the negotiations and thus their dissent should not undermine the agreement. Additionally, the agreement includes the implementation of a long-awaited 40 percent peculiar allowance, reflecting the N70,000 national minimum wage.
