95% of Building Collapses in Nigeria Caused by Quacks

Building experts in Nigeria have reported that between 90 and 95 percent of building collapses are caused by unqualified individuals seeking profit in the construction industry. Mr. Godfrey Chukwurah, a former Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Institute of Building, stated that the high poverty rate has led to an influx of untrained individuals in the profession.

He emphasized that these unprofessionals often engage at various stages of construction, including design and execution, leading to substandard buildings. Chukwurah noted that clients often choose cheaper, unqualified labor, which results in frequent maintenance issues and higher costs over time.

He also pointed out the importance of using standard materials and has urged the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to conduct oversight inspections on manufacturing companies, particularly those producing construction materials like iron rods. The lack of accountability among both builders and clients exacerbates the problem of building collapses in Nigeria.
