REA and ECOWAS Partner to Electrify 15 Institutions

On February 23, 2026, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to electrify 15 public institutions in Nigeria. This initiative is part of the Regional Off-Grid Electrification Access Project (ROGEAP) and will receive a grant of $700,000 from ECOWAS to support the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in rural health centers and schools located in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger State, and Nasarawa State.

The agreement marks the formal commencement of Nigeria's pilot implementation phase of ROGEAP, which is supported by the World Bank to expand off-grid electricity access across West Africa. Dr.

Abba Abubakar Aliyu, the Managing Director and CEO of REA, emphasized the importance of this collaboration for national development and improving reliable electricity access to critical public institutions. The partnership also involves the Niger State government, which will co-finance and monitor the project.
