Rebuilding Trust in Contributory Pension Scheme

Industry analysts have highlighted a lack of trust in Nigeria's Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) due to allegations of mismanagement and embezzlement of pension funds. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened industrial action over these issues, pointing to government mismanagement and a lack of awareness among workers and employers.

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) is tasked with educating Nigerians about the CPS and ensuring transparency in fund management. Despite having over N23 trillion in pension funds, there is widespread ignorance about how the scheme operates, leading to accusations and counter-accusations between stakeholders.

Retirees under the CPS have also voiced concerns about exploitation and inadequate benefits. PenCom and Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) are urged to improve awareness campaigns to build trust and ensure the scheme's success.
