Reddit Challenges Australia’s Social Media Kid Ban in Court

Reddit has initiated a landmark high court challenge against Australia's ban prohibiting children under 16 from using social media platforms, which is considered one of the strictest regulations globally. The challenge, which is a second major legal assault on the policy, aims to demonstrate that the law infringes on democratic freedoms and privacy rights.

Reddit's argument includes concerns about the intrusive verification process for minors, the creation of arbitrary lists of platforms, and the potential harm to vulnerable communities such as LGBTQ and neurodivergent individuals. The case, accepted by the high court, is scheduled for a hearing in 2025 and is supported by two Australian teenagers from New South Wales who claim the ban is unconstitutional.

The Australian government, represented by Communications Minister Anika, has stated that the law is necessary to protect children from harmful content. This legal battle could set a precedent for similar regulations worldwide.
