CPPE Urges FG to Reduce Living Costs for Workers

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), led by Dr. Muda Yusuf, has called on the Nigerian government to prioritize policies that reduce the living costs for workers. In a policy brief titled "Beyond Wage Increase," Yusuf noted that current wage negotiations fail to address the root causes of declining living standards, particularly amid inflationary pressures.

He emphasized that nominal wage increases are often insufficient and that protecting real income should be the central objective of labor welfare policies. The CPPE highlighted that rising food prices, transport fares, and housing costs pose immediate threats to worker welfare.

The organization advocates for structural interventions to tackle cost drivers, including investments in mass transit systems and agricultural productivity. Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero warned that higher wages would remain ineffective without macroeconomic stability.

The CPPE's recommendations include comprehensive reforms across key sectors to alleviate household expenditure burdens and improve public service delivery.
