Reps Hearings on Military Bills Amid Rising Insecurity

The House of Representatives began public hearings on proposed defense bills on Monday at the National Assembly complex in Abuja. The hearings aim to strengthen Nigeria's military institutions, improve personnel welfare, and enhance the country's response to growing security challenges.

Speaker Abba Tajudeen emphasized that the proposed legislation is part of the 10th House's priorities to modernize the legal framework governing the armed forces. The bills address contemporary security demands, including the establishment of an armed forces farm ranch scheme to support food production in conflict-affected areas.

The proposed Nigerian Military Forces Bill seeks to replace the existing Armed Forces Act and create a veteran federation to cater to the welfare interests of retired military personnel. Chairman of the House Committee on Defense, Babajimi Benson, encouraged broad participation in the legislative process.

Concerns were raised regarding the representation of lower rank veterans, with Sadiq Nwabuezeh advocating for a dedicated ministry for veteran affairs. The hearings are expected to guide the committee in preparing its final report.
