House of Reps Urges Timely Issuance of Tax Clearance Certificates

On Thursday, the House of Representatives called for the timely issuance of tax clearance certificates (TCC) for workers in the public and private sectors across Nigeria. This resolution followed a motion moved during a plenary session by Adebayo Balogun, a member representing Eti Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos State.

The motion highlighted that Nigerian workers faithfully fulfill their tax obligations but often experience delays when seeking TCCs. The House expressed concern over the absence of clearly defined timelines for the issuance of these certificates, which can create administrative inefficiencies and bureaucratic bottlenecks.

Lawmakers noted that delays compel employees to resort to irregular means to obtain TCCs for urgent requirements, such as financial transactions and school admissions. The House mandated the Nigerian Revenue Service and state internal revenue services to ensure TCCs are issued within three months after the end of the preceding tax year.

Additionally, the House committed to developing a harmonized national framework for TCC issuance and requested a report back within four weeks.
