Rivers Assembly Demands Action on Flooding Crisis

The Rivers State House of Assembly has urgently called for action to tackle flooding that has displaced families and made several roads inaccessible in parts of the state. Speaker Martin Amaewhule made this call on Tuesday after inspecting flood-affected communities in Port Harcourt City and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas.

This visit was prompted by a motion from Deputy Majority Leader Linda Somiari-Stewart during plenary, which urged the Assembly to address the worsening flood situation. Amaewhule stated that the inspection revealed many families displaced and roads blocked due to flooding, attributed to both blocked canals and natural water flow.

He urged government agencies responsible for desilting drains to act promptly to prevent further flooding. The Assembly also expressed concern over reports of poisonous reptiles entering homes submerged by floodwater.

Following the motion, lawmakers unanimously voted to assess the damage in affected communities, with Amaewhule expressing sympathy for residents and optimism for government intervention.
