Governor Wike Asserts Control Amid Political Crisis in Rivers State

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has declared his authority amidst ongoing political tensions with his political godson, Sinminalayi Fubara. The power struggle involves a face-off with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Wike, leading to a six-month suspension and the imposition of emergency rule by President Bola Tinubu in March 2025.

Despite the lifting of the emergency rule, the feud reignited as pro-Wike lawmakers threatened to impeach the governor over alleged unconstitutional behavior. Fubara's recent defection to the Progress Congress is seen as a strategic move to counter Wike's influence.

Wike, in response, has mobilized political leaders across party lines to support Tinubu's re-election bid. The dispute also involves accusations of the state government's refusal to approve the use of the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in the state capital for an event, which Fubara clarified was due to ongoing construction.

Wike acknowledges Tinubu's role in revitalizing the Niger Delta Commission and expresses hope for a renewed focus on the region's development.
