Nigeria's Transport Fares Surge in March 2026

In March 2026, transport fares in Nigeria experienced notable increases across various modes, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Intra-city bus fares rose by 14.86% month-on-month, averaging ₦1,373.49, while intercity travel surged by 17.95%, reaching ₦9,564.12.

Air travel costs increased by 2.33%, with the average fare for a single journey at ₦157,224.05. Motorcycle fares also saw a rise of 9.05%, averaging ₦1,004.34.

Water transport fares increased by 4.59%, averaging ₦2,193.56. The report indicated significant regional disparities, with Kaduna recording the highest intercity bus fare at ₦11,499.36 and Edo posting the lowest at ₦7,808.75.

The South West region had the highest intra-city bus fare at ₦1,499.87, while the North East recorded the lowest water transport fare at ₦1,355.30. These increases underscore the persistent inflationary pressures affecting Nigeria's transport sector.
