Fijian Rugby Player Saimoni Vunilagi Dies from Heatstroke

Saimoni Vunilagi, a Fijian rugby player for Kyushu KV, died after being taken to the hospital with symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke. The incident occurred in Fukuoka, Japan, where temperatures reached 35°C.

Vunilagi, who was a back row forward, stood 196 cm tall and weighed 117 kg. He began his professional career in 2023 after attending university in Japan.

The club expressed devastation over his sudden passing, stating that although he had recently joined, his generous spirit and powerful style of play had raised high hopes for his contributions in the upcoming season. The club extended heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.

Japan has been experiencing extreme heat, with close to 18,600 people hospitalized for heatstroke in late July, and the country aims to halve its annual heat-related deaths by 2030.
