Julius Malema Sentenced to Five Years for Gun Charges

Julius Malema, the 45-year-old leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was sentenced to five years in prison by a South African court on Thursday for violating firearm laws during a rally in 2018. The magistrate, Twanet Olivi, stated that Malema's actions were not impulsive and that he deliberately violated the law by firing a gun into the air.

The state had sought a maximum sentence of 15 years. Malema's defense team indicated their intention to appeal the conviction, arguing that the case is an attempt to silence him as an outspoken political leader.

Supporters of Malema gathered outside the court, expressing their discontent with the ruling. The case against him was brought forth by a small conservative group, AfriForum, which has long criticized Malema for his controversial speeches, including anti-apartheid chants.

The court's decision has sparked concerns about political motivations behind the charges.
