Graaff-Reinet Divided Over Renaming After Sobukwe

The South African town of Graaff-Reinet is embroiled in controversy over a proposed renaming to honor anti-apartheid icon Robert Sobukwe, born in the area. This change, part of a broader effort to address colonial legacies post-apartheid, has sparked significant opposition among the town's 25,000 residents.

Activist Laughton Hoffman is leading a campaign against the renaming, which has already collected approximately 22,000 signatures in a petition. A survey indicated that nearly 84% of residents oppose the name change.

The town, established in 1786, holds historical significance for Afrikaner communities and is a popular tourist destination, attracting around 100,000 visitors annually. The debate reflects ongoing divisions in South Africa regarding its apartheid history, with figures like Derek Light and Johann Rupert involved in legal challenges against the renaming.

Mangaliso Tsepo Sobukwe, grandson of Robert Sobukwe, emphasized the importance of recognizing his grandfather's role in the liberation struggle while acknowledging the community's mixed sentiments.
