Egypt Advances to World Cup 2026 Round of 16 After Win

Egypt's national football team triumphed over Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a hard-fought 1-1 draw in their World Cup 2026 match on Friday night. Emam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt early in the match, giving the Pharaohs a 1-0 lead.

However, Australia equalized when Mohamed Hani inadvertently scored an own goal, forcing the match into extra time. Despite numerous chances, neither team could secure a win during the additional 30 minutes.

The contest proceeded to a penalty shootout where Egypt successfully converted four penalties, while Australia managed only two. Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive penalty, sealing Egypt's victory and advancing them to the round of 16.

This achievement makes Egypt the second African team, alongside Morocco, to reach the knockout stage of the tournament, enhancing the continent's representation in the competition. Egypt now awaits the winner of the round of 32 clash between Argentina and Cape Verde.
