Sanusi and Experts Advocate for Support to Boost Nigeria's Pharmaceutical Industry

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, emphasized the urgent need to bolster Nigeria's pharmaceutical industry during the 2026 Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria (NAIP) Economic Outlook CEO Forum in Lagos. Sanusi highlighted that 70% of drugs used in Nigeria are imported, with 82% of imports coming from India, posing a risk to the country's healthcare system and economic sovereignty.

Key stakeholders like former Minister of Health, Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, and industry leaders Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe and Bankole Ezebuilo stressed the importance of investing in local pharmaceutical production to achieve self-sufficiency and ensure healthcare security. They highlighted the strategic value of local drug manufacturing in enhancing healthcare resilience and economic stability.
