Nigerian Senate Approves Electronic Results Transmission

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Senate approved the electronic transmission of election results while retaining a manual backup as part of the Electoral Act repeal and re-enactment bill for 2026. This resolution followed extensive discussions in a plenary session, culminating in a divisive vote where 55 senators supported the retention of the controversial manual backup provision, while 15 opposed it.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of Abia South previously attempted to challenge this clause but withdrew his motion during an emergency plenary session last week. Senate President Godswill Akpabio reminded colleagues of the public criticism surrounding Abaribe's earlier withdrawal.

The Senate's latest decision aims to ensure a credible and transparent electoral process, reflecting the significant efforts and resources involved in maintaining democratic governance in Nigeria.
