Nigerian Senate Resumes Electoral Act Debate Amid Public Outrage Over Delays

The Nigerian Senate has reconvened to deliberate on the Electoral Act amendment bill following public pressure and criticism over delays that could impact the credibility of the 2027 general elections. Led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, a committee chaired by Niyi Adegbonmire is working to resolve outstanding issues.

The bill includes provisions to enhance voter participation, curb electoral fraud, and introduce mandatory electronic transmission of results. Human rights lawyer Femi Falana criticized the National Assembly for stalling reforms, while opposition parties like the Labour Party and ADC expressed concerns over the slow legislative pace.

Despite growing criticism, the Senate remains committed to expediting the process through a new ad hoc committee. The final version of the bill is expected to be ready by the end of the week.
