Nigerian Senate to Pass State Police Bill on June 23

The Nigerian Senate plans to pass a constitutional amendment bill for the creation of state police during an emergency session scheduled for June 23, 2026. This decision follows a recent inability to meet the required two-thirds majority for constitutional amendments due to quorum issues.

Senate leadership has intensified consultations to ensure full attendance for the upcoming session. The proposed state police aims to decentralize policing powers, allowing state governments to respond more effectively to local security threats, as the current centralized system has faced criticism amid rising insecurity, including banditry and terrorism.

Additionally, the Bauchi State government has inaugurated 2,176 newly trained forest security personnel to combat criminal activities in rural areas. Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau emphasized the importance of protecting forest reserves while urging the new recruits to maintain professionalism.

The Nigerian Air Force has also graduated 111 personnel from a special forces course to enhance its operational capabilities.
