Senate Spokesman Clarifies Vehicle Procurement Issues

Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate spokesman and chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, stated that senators are not responsible for the procurement of official vehicles. This clarification follows a recent ruling by the Federal High Court in Lagos, which declared the National Assembly's N110 billion vehicle procurement scheme unlawful.

The court ruled that the procurement process violated legal provisions and public trust, highlighting that lawmakers placed themselves in a position of conflict of interest by benefiting from the expenditure. The judgment, delivered on May 6, 2023, by Justice Bogoro, mandated that future procurement processes comply strictly with due process and transparency.

Adaramodu emphasized that the procurement of vehicles is managed exclusively by the bureaucracy of the National Assembly, and no vehicles are registered in the names of lawmakers. He reiterated that the Senate operates within established administrative procurement procedures and that individual lawmakers are not responsible for procurement decisions.
