Senegal PM Downplays Football Dispute with Morocco Amid Strong Ties

Senegal's Prime Minister, Ousman Sonko, visited Rabat, Morocco, to address the recent football row between the two nations during the Africa Cup of Nations final. The match, where Senegal beat Morocco 1-0, resulted in chaos as Senegalese supporters protested a last-minute penalty awarded to Morocco.

Sonko emphasized the strong ties between Senegal and Morocco, highlighting cooperation in various sectors like tourism, energy, and infrastructure. Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch echoed similar sentiments during their meeting.

King Mohammed VI expressed confidence in African brotherhood post-incident. Notably, 18% of Morocco's migrant population is Senegalese.

Eighteen Senegalese supporters remain in pre-trial detention in Morocco, facing hooliganism charges related to the match, with the trial postponed to 2024.
