SERAP Demands INEC Action Against Early Campaign Violators

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a seven-day ultimatum to prosecute political parties and politicians engaging in early campaign activities, which violate electoral laws. SERAP accused some governors of diverting funds meant for development to finance premature campaigns.

The group highlighted the illegality of early campaigning under the Electoral Act and urged INEC to enforce the law to ensure accountability. Failure to act, according to SERAP, would be seen as complicity.

The organization emphasized the need for INEC to use its constitutional powers to sanction offenders and regulate early campaign activities effectively.
