The 2026 FIFA World Cup commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, featuring performances by Colombian pop star Shakira and Nigerian Afrobeat star Burna Boy. Shakira, alongside her ex-boyfriend Gerard Piqué, performed the official anthem "Dai Dai," which was released a month prior and co-written with Burna Boy, Benni Adam, Jon Bellion, Ed Sheeran, and Alex Castillo.

The event attracted thousands of fans, who were excited to witness the World Cup on home turf for the first time in 40 years. The ceremony also included performances from other artists such as J Balvin, Danni Ocean, Fher Olvera, Vicente Fernández, and South African star Tyla, who performed the national anthem.

The tournament is co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, with Mexico's match against South Africa ending in a 2-0 victory for the hosts.
