Shehu Sani Supports Passport Withdrawal for Renouncers

Shehu Sani, the former Senator for Kaduna Central, has expressed his support for the Nigerian government's initiative to withdraw and deactivate passports belonging to individuals who have formally renounced their Nigerian citizenship. This reaction follows a directive issued by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, instructing the Nigeria Immigration Service to implement this measure immediately. Sani articulated his views via an official post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, emphasizing that once an individual chooses to change their nationality, it is appropriate to enforce the withdrawal of their Nigerian passport. He highlighted the importance of adhering to constitutional procedures and ensuring that individuals who cease to be citizens no longer have access to Nigerian sovereign documents. The Minister explained that this action is part of ongoing reforms in immigration and identity management systems, aimed at preventing the misuse of travel documents and enhancing border security. The government intends to continue tightening systems to safeguard Nigeria's citizenship integrity.
