Goodluck Jonathan Advocates for Lower Age Limit for Political Office Holders

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan proposed lowering the age limit for political office holders to between 25 and 50 years during a memorial lecture in Abuja organized by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing individuals within this age group for top government positions, citing the need for superior physical strength, mental acuity, and the ability to endure the intense demands of office.

Jonathan contrasted his experience with the late Murtala Muhammed, who assumed power at 38 and implemented significant reforms within just 200 days. He questioned the rigidity of the current age threshold requirements, suggesting that candidates for roles like senators, deputy governors, governors, and even the presidency should be at least 40 years old.

Jonathan also criticized the excessive time spent by governors abroad, leading to challenges in managing states and contributing to security and development issues.
