South Africa Deports Over 53,000 Migrants Amid Tensions

South Africa has deported and repatriated over 53,000 migrants, with 80 percent being Malawian nationals, within one month as part of an immigration enforcement campaign. This crackdown follows a rise in anti-immigrant tensions and coincides with protests against illegal migration that have turned violent.

Malawians have gathered outside their embassy in Johannesburg seeking assistance to return home, expressing that they no longer feel safe in South Africa. The South African government, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has announced plans to strengthen border security and enforce immigration laws, acknowledging public concerns about illegal migration.

However, the government has rejected claims that anti-migrant groups are responsible for high unemployment and crime rates. Reports indicate that South African police are investigating the deaths of three migrants, including two Mozambicans, amid unrest.

The situation has prompted several African governments to arrange transportation for their citizens wishing to return home.
