South-East Consumers Demand NERC Compensation for Power Issues

The South-East Electricity Consumers Association (SECA), represented by Dr. Sebastian Chukwuebuka Okafor, has called for compensation from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) due to inadequate electricity supply affecting consumers in the region.

During a press conference in Enugu, Okafor described the NERC's recent approval of compensation for customers impacted by grid constraints in February and March 2026 as a positive step. He emphasized that the compensation should not lead to automatic downgrading of tariff bands but rather provide relief through regulatory intervention.

SECA advocates for a compensation framework that includes token credits for prepaid customers and bill adjustments for postpaid customers, ensuring that affected consumers receive relief without disrupting existing technical arrangements. They also urged the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) and other regulatory agencies in the South-East to adopt similar consumer-friendly approaches.

SECA warned against mass downgrading of tariff bands, which could complicate electricity distribution and management in the region.
