Spain and Catholic Church Reach Compensation Deal for Abuse Victims

On Monday, Spain's government, represented by Justice Minister Felix Bolano, signed a landmark agreement with the Catholic Church to compensate victims of clerical sexual abuse. This deal, which was first reached in January, allows victims who are unable to pursue legal action due to the statute of limitations to receive reparations from the Church.

Bolano emphasized the importance of ensuring that victims are not forgotten and that compensation will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The agreement involves the Spanish ombudsman, who will have final authority on decisions regarding compensation awards.

Lui Argüello, president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, described the agreement as a gesture of acknowledgment from the Church. A report from Spain's ombudsman indicated that approximately 200,000 minors suffered sexual abuse by Roman Catholic clergy since 1940, with the number potentially rising to 400,000 when including abuse by laypersons.

The Church's efforts to compensate victims have faced criticism for being inconsistent globally.
