Spanish Intelligence Warned of Ceuta Migrant Crisis

Spain’s National Intelligence Center issued a warning on July 29 regarding plans for a mass migrant crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, shortly before a significant border crisis occurred. This warning was prompted by social-media calls for individuals to storm the border fence and attempt to enter Ceuta by sea.

The following day, more than 72,000 people reportedly attempted to cross into the enclave, leading to an extraordinary crisis. The release of declassified documents has sparked renewed scrutiny over how Spanish authorities prepared for this influx and the role of Morocco in the events.

While Spanish officials have not provided evidence that the Moroccan government organized the crossings, authorities in Ceuta have consistently called for increased support from the European Union. The EU has responded by providing financial assistance to Spain for border surveillance, returns, and support for unaccompanied minors.

The situation is now part of a broader political and legal debate regarding the handling of the crisis.
