Nigeria's Maritime University Upgrade Faces Significant Delays

On February 16, 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari signed a law aimed at upgrading Nigeria's maritime education by establishing a new university, the University of Maritime Studies in Oron, Akwa Ibom State. This law repealed the Maritime Academy of Nigeria Act of 2004, which had allowed the academy to operate for nearly two decades without legal compliance.

Despite the law's enactment, as of May 15, 2023, the transition to the new university has not materialized, leading to concerns about bureaucratic delays and financial interests that benefit certain officials. The Maritime Academy continues to admit students under its old structure, with no clear timeline for the transition.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, expressed hopes that the upgrade would enhance research and innovation. However, local leaders, including Godswill Akpabio, have indicated internal conflicts regarding the academy's future and funding, complicating the transition process.

The situation remains unresolved, with pressures from local youth movements for immediate implementation of the law.
