Lagos Food Prices Surge Amid Rising Fuel Costs

In March 2026, food prices across major Lagos markets experienced a sharp increase, primarily driven by rising petrol costs that escalated transport and logistics expenses. A survey tracking 68 food items across markets such as Mushin, Daleko, Mile 12, and Oyingbo revealed that 43 items recorded price increases compared to only 13 items that declined.

The surge in fuel prices began in late February when the pump price rose from N875 to N960 per liter, and Dangote Refinery increased its price from N774 to N874 per liter. Analysts noted that the volatility of global oil prices and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East contributed to the inflationary pressures on staple foods.

Notably, the price of pepper saw a dramatic rise, with medium bags increasing from N32,000 to N80,000 (a 141.38% increase), while big bags rose from N58,000 to N140,000 (150% increase). The price of tomatoes also rose by 50%, and beans experienced significant increases, with brown beans climbing from N50,000 to N85,500 (71% increase).
