Supreme Court Overturns Trump's Tariffs, Citing Overreach

On a Friday, the Supreme Court delivered a significant 6-3 ruling against former President Donald Trump's tariffs, determining that his administration exceeded its authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Chief Justice John Roberts authored the majority opinion, which was joined by three liberal justices and two conservative justices, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett.

The court found that Trump's broad interpretation of the IEEPA did not authorize the imposition of tariffs on goods entering the United States. The ruling invalidated two major categories of tariffs, including a 34% tariff on imports from China and a 25% tariff on certain goods from Canada, China, and Mexico.

The dissenting justices included Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, and Samuel Alito. This ruling represents a rare defeat for the Trump administration at the Supreme Court, which had previously upheld certain tariffs imposed during his second term starting in January.
