INEC Confirms Disqualification for Unregistered Candidates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stated that political parties that field candidates whose names are not on the membership registers submitted to the commission will be disqualified from the 2027 general elections. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, made this announcement during an appearance on Trust TV’s Daily Politics programme.
He referenced the Supreme Court's judgment on September 24, 2026, in the case of INEC v Zenith Labour Party, which affirmed sections 77(5)-(7) of the Electoral Act 2026. This ruling mandates that parties must submit their membership lists at least three weeks before their primaries.
Haruna emphasized that parties violating this law would not be allowed to substitute candidates and that some parties might be unable to field candidates for various elective positions if their members are not registered properly.
