Nigerian Labour Congress Urges Government to Suspend New Tax Law Amid Economic Concerns

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) are calling for the suspension of a new tax law to prevent worsening economic hardship for workers. NLC President Joe Ajaero raised concerns about the law imposing heavier taxes on struggling individuals and excluding workers from the reform process.

The NLC demands the government address worker wages ahead of minimum wage negotiations and review the tax law constitutionally. Additionally, Ajaero emphasized the need for meaningful engagement with labor unions on policies affecting workers.

The tax reform, effective from January 1, 2026, aims to relieve low-income earners but faces opposition due to its perceived negative impact on the vulnerable population.
